Ooma and my toll free 800 number

I am trying out ooma office for 30 days before I drop Verizon. I currently have 4 lines and fax machine, my 800 number has been attached to my main phone number for 16 years. Will I still be able to attach it to the ooma line once it is ported. This is critical because 90 % of my new business comes thru my 800 line. thank you.

I am sorry, but Ooma currently does not offer toll-free numbers. I checked Verizon’s website and it says, “Incoming Toll Free calls can be routed to any existing switched termination number or facility.” They also mention, “Toll Free usage and monthly fees contribute to your long distance calling plan monthly minimum spend level.” Therefore, you would need to check with Verizon to find out if it would be worthwhile to maintain an account with them for 800-number forwarding while using Ooma for your local and long-distance outbound calling. You would also want to ask them if it is possible to keep your 800 number with Verizon if you port your main number to Ooma.

Ooma Office does support toll-free numbers. It’d be best to confirm with Ooma support that your toll-free number can be ported to the Ooma Office system. We should have support for online porting via the Ooma Office portal soon.

Hi Bobby B,

It looks like the online support section needs updating…

Selecting a phone number

One of the most important steps in establishing your business’s identity is selecting the primary phone number that will be associated with your Ooma Office system. With Ooma, you will have the option of selecting a new phone number, or transferring your existing phone number.

During the final step of the activation process you will be asked to select a phone number, as shown in the screen shot below. You will also repeat this process when you add additional capacity to your Ooma Office account. You can take this opportunity to select a new permanent phone number that will become part of your business’s identity.

If you have already established a business presence with an existing phone number you can choose to port that number to Ooma. Even if you are planning to port your current number, however, you must select a temporary number during the activation process to use while you wait for the porting process to be completed.

Am I guaranteed a phone number in my local area code?

There is a very good chance that you will be able to select a phone number within a local area code, but Ooma cannot guarantee that you will be able to find a phone number in your desired area code.

Can I choose an 800 number for my business?

No. At this time, only regular U.S. numbers are available for selection.

Well, that was fast! Thanks for the update…
